IPTV in one minute
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Instead of receiving channels through an aerial, a cable or a satellite dish, you receive them over your broadband connection, the same way you watch a video online.
Because it is simply data over the internet, IPTV works on almost any screen that can run a player app: Smart TVs, streaming sticks, phones, tablets and computers.
How it differs from cable, satellite and terrestrial TV
- No dish or special cable: your existing broadband is enough.
- Channels sit in an on-screen guide that you can search and sort into favourites.
- Quality depends on your internet speed rather than weather or signal strength.
- You can usually watch on several screens in the house.
What you need to get started
- A compatible device, such as a Smart TV, Fire TV Stick, Android TV box or Apple TV.
- Broadband of about 15 Mbit/s for HD and 30 Mbit/s for 4K.
- An IPTV player app installed on that device.
- The login details your provider sends you.
Most Nordic households already have more bandwidth than this, thanks to widespread fibre and cable broadband.
What affects picture quality
Three things decide how good the picture looks: the stream itself, your home network and your device. A wired connection, an up-to-date player app and a modern streaming box remove most problems before they start.
Questions to ask before you subscribe
- Who do I contact if something breaks, and how fast do they reply?
- Is there a clear refund policy?
- Can I check quality on my own device first?
- What personal data do you collect, and why?
- Is the content licensed for viewing in my country?
That last question matters. Channel availability and licensing differ from country to country, so always ask a provider what applies to you and read their terms before paying.
