What internet speed do you need for IPTV? SD, HD and 4K explained

How many Mbit/s you need for SD, HD, Full HD and 4K IPTV, how to count several screens, and how to test your connection properly.

The short answer

  • SD: about 5 Mbit/s
  • HD: about 15 Mbit/s
  • Full HD: about 25 Mbit/s
  • 4K Ultra HD: 30 Mbit/s or more

These are per stream and they are comfortable targets, not hard minimums.

Count every screen

If one person watches 4K in the living room and another watches HD in the bedroom, you need roughly 45 Mbit/s free at the same time, plus whatever else the household is doing online.

Wi-Fi or cable?

A network cable is almost always more stable. If your TV or box is far from the router, a cable run or a powerline or mesh system can make a bigger difference than a faster plan.

Make Wi-Fi work better

  • Use the 5 GHz band for streaming devices.
  • Keep the router in the open and as close to the TV as practical.
  • Avoid placing it behind a TV, in a cupboard or next to a microwave.
  • Move heavy downloads away from viewing hours.

How to test properly

Run a speed test on the same device that you watch on, in the evening when the network is busiest. A test on your phone next to the router tells you little about the TV in another room.

When it is not your speed

If tests look fine but a channel still stutters, the cause may be the app, the device or the stream. Restart everything, update the player and message us with the channel and time. We will check it.
